We're Not Animals
Sunday, December 08, 2013Where does the Bible speak on bestiality?Sincerely,
SPCA
Dear SPCA,
Bestiality is a form of fornication. ‘Fornication’ means ‘immoral sexual behavior’. It is clearly labeled as fornication in Lev 18:23 and Lev 20:15-16.
Writer's Block
Monday, November 18, 2013Well, what does the Bible say about God and science fiction? I want to write a poem based in the future. I want it to be purely science fiction, but it'd be about a 2031 Angel Of Death and featuring dialogue. Is this insulting? Wrong? Or is there no real answer yet?Sincerely,
A Poet And I Know It
Dear A Poet And I Know It,
Writing is just like speaking; whatever we say or write must show reverence to God (Heb 12:28), avoid crass or debased language (Eph 5:3-4), tell the truth (Eph 4:15), and be seasoned with grace (Col 4:6). There is nothing inherently wrong with writing science fiction as long as it meets those guidelines. If your poem is written in a way that contradicts Scripture or is full of things that are evil or lewd – it is wrong. Avoid those things, and you will be fine.
Skin Deep
Friday, November 15, 2013Did discrimination exist from the beginning? Why did God choose a good-looking Jesus as His son? Why did God choose a beautiful Mary as a mother to God? Does God look on personality as well?Sincerely,
Picture Perfect
Dear Picture Perfect,
God didn’t make Jesus good-looking. In fact, Isaiah 53:2 says that Jesus wasn’t anything special to look at. Many portraits and paintings have been made depicting Jesus as a handsome man, but the Scriptures say that He wasn’t. What drew people to Jesus were His character and His words (Lk 24:32, Jhn 7:45-46). Mary also was known for her character, not her outward beauty (Lk 1:30). God says that it is the inner character of people that is pleasing to Him (Lk 11:39, 2 Cor 4:16). God shows no partiality between the wealthy and the poor, the handsome and the ugly (Eph 6:9, 1 Pet 1:17). God cares about whom you are, not how you look.
Rahab's Choice
Monday, November 11, 2013Is lying in a life or death situation a sin?Sincerely,
In A Pinch
Dear In A Pinch,
God hates lying (Pr 6:16-17), but you don’t have to tell everyone everything about your life. Even Jesus ignored his brothers’ request to know His comings and goings on occasion (Jhn 7:8-10). Jesus never lied (Tit 1:2, Heb 4:15), but He did deflect their question because what He did or didn’t do, wasn’t any of there business. In a life or death situation, you have every right to deflect someone from the truth in order to preserve life.
It is worth noting that good christians are of mixed opinions on this issue. Some believe it would be perfectly appropriate to flat out lie because you would be protecting human life – which is the greater good. Other christians believe that it would be better to die and go to face God without lying. Both sides have good arguments, and in such extreme circumstances, each person would need to choose what they believed was the most faithful and godly option.
Give Up The Ghost
Thursday, November 07, 2013I need help. Every time someone in our family passes away, my son gets scared. People that are adults have told him that people who have passed can come back and visit us. He will not sleep alone for a long time by himself. My aunt just passed away this week, and we are dealing with it again. I do not know if this spirit or ghost thing is true or not because I have not ever seen one. I do not want to tell him lies, so I figured the best thing is to ask a preacher if it is true or made up, and I will explain it to him. Thank you and hope you can help.Sincerely,
Ghost Buster
Dear Ghost Buster,
Death is a very difficult concept for children to cope with, and myths can make a tricky subject even more trying. When people die, they do not come back to visit us. Heb 9:27 says that when we die, we go to meet God – we don’t come back. Lk 16:19-23 tells us that when people die, good or bad, they go to Paradise or torments. Ghost stories and tales of spirits are just that – stories and tales. You can confidently tell your son that no one is coming back to visit him, and he can rest easy knowing God is in control.
