The Old Haunts
Wednesday, September 26, 2012Two of our drivers claim to have seen a ghost on the same oil lease. I know that ghosts are demons, not dead people haunting. I myself feel cold chills around the same place, and tell them to depart from me in the name of Jesus. Why is it that it or they keep coming back to this location?
Sincerely,
Born-Again Trucker
Dear Born-Again Trucker,
Evil spirits are real, but they were cast out and their powers greatly reduced by Christ and the apostles and the Bible never gives an example of demons haunting or possessing a property. Demon possession ended not long after the days of Christ. Jesus made it clear that one of His jobs was to bind the devil and take His strength away by casting out his demons (Matt 12:28-29). When Jesus’ disciples had come back from their evangelism trips and related to Him that they had cast out many demons, Jesus told them that they were defeating Satan by getting rid of Satan’s demonic minions (Lk 10:17-18). When Jesus and His disciples cast out demons, they did it permanently (Lk 8:30-33) and bound Satan by their acts. We no longer have to deal with such overt attacks by the devil because he has been bound by Christ’s sacrifice (Rev. 20:2). Demon possession no longer exists; the devil must use subtler methods to deceive us now.
Ashes To Ashes
Thursday, September 13, 2012I want to know, is it wrong to smoke cigarettes?Sincerely,
Burn Baby Burn
Dear Burn Baby Burn,
Yes, cigarette smoking is wrong. There is no direct verse that condemns smoking, but there are many verses that indirectly condemn it.
- Cigarettes are known poisons. There was a time when people were unaware of the effects of cigarettes upon the human body, but we now know that there is no redeeming health value to cigarettes. Cigarettes directly poison the human body. God tells us to treat the human body as a temple (1 Cor 6:19). Purposefully poisoning your body is not exactly honoring that command.
- Cigarettes are known to be highly addictive. Cigarettes are designed to get people addicted to them, so that one will do just about anything to continue to get their “fix”. Cigarettes become your master. Christians cannot afford to have any master other than God (Matt 6:24). Christians should never be brought under the power of anything other than God (1 Cor 6:12)
- This life is a gift from God; He created us (Gen 1:27). Christians are supposed to live lives that are preparing us for whatever work God has in store for us (2 Tim 2:21). We are to purge ourselves of anything that would keep us from being the best servants to Jesus we can be. If you die ten years early from cigarettes, who knows what work you will have failed to do?
- Smoking not only harms you, it harms others. Second-hand smoke is a known carcinogen and poison. If you know that what you are doing is harming others, you must stop (Jas 4:17)
Whatever we do, it should be done to the glory of God (1 Cor 10:31). Cigarettes wouldn’t fit into the category of “glorifying God”.
And Baby Makes Three
Monday, September 10, 2012My wonderful husband and I are expecting our first child. His parents are hoping for a biblical name. My husband and I would like to name this baby after one of my grandparents, and none of them have names from the Bible. My husband remembers his mother once saying that if a person doesn't have a biblical name, God doesn't approve of them. There can't be any truth to this, can there?Sincerely,
Hoping for Henry Or Pearl
Dear Hoping For Henry Or Pearl,
No, there isn’t any truth to this. Many people name their children after people from the Bible, but our names do not define us; our actions do. It is the memory of the choices we make in our lives that determine who we are; a name in and of itself is just window-dressing (Pr 10:7). Even the church in Sardis relied too much on the reputation their name brought and was condemned for it (Rev 3:1). Inversely, John the Baptist was given a name that had no meaning whatsoever to his family (Lk 1:60-63), and yet he was considered the greatest prophet of his day (Matt 11:11). Name your children whatever you like, but make sure and train them up in God’s ways (Pr 22:6). If they grow up and live faithfully, their name shall become a blessing.
Beef, It's What's For Dinner
Monday, September 10, 2012If it is wrong to kill, why do so many people eat meat? Hamburger isn't from cows who died of old age. How do people justify this?Sincerely,
PETA Pal
Dear PETA Pal,
This is a great example of how context comes into play. When we are told not to kill (Rom 13:9, Jas 2:11), we have to understand what the word ‘kill’ is referring to. Context is the only way to do that. Both of those verses refer to other sins as well – adultery, stealing and coveting. Rom 13:9 also refers to a positive command to “love your neighbor as yourself”. The context tells us that we are talking about interacting with people, not animals. Adultery, coveting, stealing and loving your neighbor all reference human-to-human relationships, not human-to-animal relationships. The one time killing is referred to in the context of animals is Acts 10:13 when, God comes to Peter in a vision and tells him to, “Kill and eat”. Context is key. The type of killing that is wrong is the murdering of a fellow human created in the image of God (Gen 1:27).
Fido's Last Stand
Sunday, September 09, 2012I love my pets very much, but do they have souls? Will I see them in heaven?Sincerely,
Cat Lady
Dear Cat Lady,
Animals have the “breath of life” just like humans do (Gen 2:7, Gen 6:17). This “breath of life” is also sometimes referred to as the “spirit” of a man or animal (Gen 7:22). Animals have spirits, and humans have spirits, but humans were also made in the image of God (Gen 1:26). Our spirit is eternal and will go up to be with the Father, and animal spirits are temporary and will return to the dust of the earth (Eccl 3:21). God made our spirit of a different caliber than He made those of the animal. Dogs don’t go to heaven, but we can feel confident that God has decided wisely on this issue like all others. We may not always understand His reasons, but He always makes good decisions.
