NEW TESTAMENT
A Question Of Rest
Monday, March 10, 2014Why does the christian worship God on Sunday? In the Ten Commandments it says Saturday is the Sabbath day?Sincerely,
Trying To Believe
Dear Trying To Believe,
The ‘Ten Commandments’ were Old Testament laws, and you need to live by nine of them. The entire Old Testament law, including the ‘Ten Commandments’ was done away with in Christianity (Gal 3:23-25). The New Testament law supersedes the Old Testament one, and the law written on stone tablets (the Mosaic law which includes the Ten Commandments (Deu 4:13) has passed away (2 Cor 3:3-11).
Having said that, the New Testament reiterates nine out of the ten commands. Christians do obey nine of the ‘Ten Commandments’ because Christ thought nine of them were worth keeping in the New Testament.
- Thou shalt not have any other god before me (Ex 20:3, 1 Cor 10:14)
- Thou shalt not make graven images or bow down to them (Ex 20:4-5, 1 Jhn 5:21)
- Thou shalt not take God’s name in vain (Ex 20:7, Heb 12:28)
- Honor thy father and mother (Ex 20:12, Eph 6:1-2)
- Thou shalt not kill (Ex 20:13, 1 Pet 4:15)
- Thou shalt not commit adultery (Ex 20:14, Heb 13:4)
- Thou shalt not steal (Ex 20:15, Eph 4:28)
- Thou shalt not bear false witness (Ex 20:16, Rev 21:8)
- Thou shalt not covet (Ex 20:17, Eph 5:3)
The only one of the ‘Ten Commandments’ left out is the keeping of the Sabbath (Ex 20:8). Christians aren’t bound to keep the Sabbath holy; Jews were. In the New Testament, we are told to meet on Sunday to take the Lord’s Supper (Acts 20:7).
Universal Healthcare
Friday, March 07, 2014In Jhn 5:1-9, at the pool of Bethesda, multitudes were at the pool waiting for an angel to come and trouble the water so that the one who got inside first got the healing. In this passage, only two people were healed. Jesus healed the lame man and went away. The multitude went home the way they came. Why didn't Jesus heal more????Sincerely,
Medicine For All
Dear Medicine For All,
Two things that should help answer your question:
- We don’t know how many people Jesus healed. The gospel of John tells us that not every miracle of Christ was recorded in the Bible, only the ones pertinent to our belief in Him (Jhn 21:25). Jesus may very well have healed more people there at the pool of Bethesda, but the only healing recorded was the healing of the lame man.
- Jesus didn’t heal everyone because His job wasn’t to heal every sick person on the planet. Jesus came to seek and save the lost (Lk 19:10). Jesus sometimes refused to care for physical needs when He didn’t think it would further the Gospel (like in the case of the people who followed Him because He could create food from thin air – Jhn 6:26-27). The miracles Jesus performed testified of His goodness (Acts 10:38) and were a witness to His preaching (Jhn 14:10-11, Acts 2:22). It wasn’t about healing every sick person; it was about making sure everyone knew that He was the Son of God.
Angel Onlooker
Wednesday, March 05, 2014Explain 2 Peter 2:4 and Jude 1:6 regarding these "sinful angels" being imprisoned please.Sincerely,
Angel Onlooker
Dear Angel Onlooker,
There isn’t much to explain because God doesn’t give us a lot of details about these rebellious angels. Apparently, at some point in time, there were a group of angelic beings that rebelled against God, and even though they were angels, God punished them for their rebellion and judged them worthy of eternity in hell (2 Pet 2:4). Those angels are currently in some form of bondage as they wait for the Day of Judgment. On the Day of Judgment, when all men will be judged (Heb 9:27), these angels will be judged as well.
City Council
Tuesday, February 25, 2014Why did the people from the city ask Him to leave after Jesus cast the demons out of the two men and into the herd of pigs?Sincerely,
Hospitable
Dear Hospitable,
The story you are referring to can be found in Matt 8:28-34, Mk 5:1-17, and Lk 8:26-37. This was one of the few trips that Jesus made into Gentile territory. That is why there was a herd of pigs there when He cast out the demon. Jews would never have accepted pigs because they were unclean, but on the Gentile side of the Sea of Galilee, such things were normal (Lk 8:26). The account in Luke says why they asked Jesus to leave. They begged Him to leave because they were afraid of Him and the power He had (Lk 8:35-37). After Jesus cast out the legion of demons, and those demons destroyed an entire herd of pigs, the people were terrified of Him.
Honey, I'm Home!
Monday, February 24, 2014I was reading your post on "ghosts", and it got me thinking of the situation in the Bible where the spirits arose from the dead and appeared to people just after Jesus had been crucified. This has always intrigued me. Do you think this was a one-time thing specific to the crucifixion? Not that we could ever know, but I've always wondered who they appeared to and how those people responded to it.Sincerely,
Post-Mortem Ponderer
Dear Post-Mortem Ponderer,
Matt 27:50-53 describes events that happened immediately after Jesus breathed His last breath. The temple veil was miraculously torn from top to bottom, rocks were rent asunder, the earth quaked, and some of the faithful who had died were raised from the dead and appeared to people in Jerusalem. This was a one-time event because all of these things were used to point to the fact that Jesus really was the Christ. Matt 27:54 says that these events caused people to confess Jesus as the Son of God. Just as further clarification, even the people raised in this event wouldn’t be characterized as ghosts because the physical bodies were raised from the dead and came out of the tombs… ghosts don’t have bodies.
As for the last part of your question: we too have often wondered how people reacted to their dead loved ones coming back to life. It certainly would have been quite the event – which, of course, was the point.
