I see a lot of questions on baptism and a lot of different opinions.  In Romans 10:9, it says that if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be SAVED.  For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.  Verse 13 states, “For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”  I have found over 300 verses promising salvation for those who simply believe in the name of the Lord.  Why are you so focused on baptism for salvation?  Yes, it is very important, but I do not see anything saying if I'm not baptized, I'm not saved.  I do see, though, that if I don't believe, I do not get eternal life.

Everyone agrees that we must believe in order to be saved because there are many verses that point out the importance of faith (‘belief’ and ‘faith’ are the same word in the Greek language).  However, just because one thing is required for salvation doesn’t mean other things aren’t also required.  You mentioned Rom 10:9 (which states that confession is a requirement of salvation).  Rom 8:24 says that we are saved by hope.  Rom 10:1-2 says that knowledge is a requirement for salvation (knowledge of God’s Word – Rom 10:17, Rom. 1:16).  2 Thess 2:10 says that love of truth is a requirement for salvation.  All of these things are requirements for salvation.  God tells us that the sum of His Word provides us with the truth (Ps 119:160) and that we can’t add or subtract a single verse (Rev 22:18-19).

There are verses that teach that belief saves you (Acts 16:30-31), but there are also verses that teach that baptism saves you (1 Pet 3:21 is the clearest).  If we cut out baptism, which is mentioned in every single case of christian conversion, we can no longer say that we are taking the total of God’s Word.  We are called friends of Christ when we do what He commands us (Jhn 15:14).  He commands us to be baptized to wash away our sins (Acts 22:16)… if we want a new life free of sin, we must be buried with Him in baptism as He commands us (Rom 6:3-4).  You mentioned Rom 10:9 as a very simple verse – confess with your mouth and believe with your heart, and you will be saved.  Mk. 16:16 is equally simple – “He who believes and is baptized will be saved”.

I was baptized at fourteen.  I wandered away and committed sins for several years.  I came back to God with a truly repentant heart.  I love the Lord with all my heart.  Will He have me, as unworthy a sinner as myself, back?

Before you ask the question, “Am I still saved?” – let’s take the time to make sure you properly sought God’s forgiveness the first time.  We highly recommend you read “What Must I Do To Be Saved” and thoroughly examine whether you properly obeyed God the first time around.  If you did – WONDERFUL!  If you didn’t… now is the time to do things right.

That being said, let’s address God’s willingness to forgive.  God says that He finds more joy in one sinner returning to Him than in ninety-nine who don’t need to repent (Lk 15:7).  God also says that there should be no limit to forgiveness when someone repents (Lk 17:4).  When we turn back to God, He promises to show us mercy and to remember our sins no more (Heb 8:12).  It is very normal for us to still feel guilt when we dwell upon our previous lives of rebellion against God, but we can’t let that guilt consume us.  God forgives us; therefore, we can turn that guilt into gratitude (Rom 6:17).  If you repent, He is ready to forgive.

I recently attended a church where a salvation invitation was given to the attendees at the close of the service.  I felt very strongly about raising my hand and receiving God's free gift of salvation.  Immediately, I felt the release of the burdens I'd been carrying for so long as I acknowledged Him and asked for forgiveness.  I want to be baptized but would like to learn more about baptism before doing so and get into some Bible studies.  What do you suggest, so that I can continue in obedience?

When would I know that it is the right time to be baptized?  When I was about ten years old, I was baptized in the Baptist church; would I have to do anything different, or would that baptism be okay for me?

You will know it is the right time to be baptized when you’ve learned about Christ and what the Bible teaches about salvation.  Before people are baptized, they first become disciples (Matt 28:19).  A disciple is a student; therefore, the Bible teaches that we must study before we become baptized.  Baptism is an act of faith (in fact, it is the first act of faith that someone takes to become a christian – Acts 2:37-41).  All faith comes from hearing and obeying the Scriptures (Rom 10:17).

So what do the Scriptures teach about baptism?  The Bible says that baptism is a burial with Christ that gives us new life (Rom 6:4).  It also teaches that baptism saves us (1 Pet 3:21).  Unless you are baptized, you will be lost (Mk 16:16).  You won’t find a single case in the Bible of someone becoming a New Testament christian without being baptized… it is that important.  That is what the Bible says on the topic.  Any baptism that counts must be done for salvation and through Christ – otherwise you are just getting wet.

Now, you said that you were baptized in the Baptist church, so let’s see what the Baptist Manual says about baptism.  If you understand what the Baptist church teaches on baptism, you can know whether or not your baptism was done for the correct reasons.

The Standard Manual For Baptist Churches states on page 22, "It is most likely that in the Apostolic age when there was but `one Lord, one faith, and one baptism,' and no differing denominations existed, the baptism of a convert by that very act constituted him a member of the church, and at once endowed him with all the rights and privileges of full membership. In that sense, 'baptism was the door into the church.' Now it is different: (emphasis ours – AYP)” .  The Baptist church recognizes that baptism was for salvation in the New Testament… but they no longer teach that because they believe the times have changed!  It is wrong to change what the Bible says (Gal 1:8, Rev 22:18-19).  The Baptists don’t teach Bible baptism, and therefore, your Baptist baptism didn’t save you.

Sometimes, I am asked if I am a "born-again" christian.  I don't know how to respond.  What is a "born-again" christian?

A born-again christian is just a christian; it is another way to say that you are saved.  The terminology comes from Jhn 3:1-6 when Jesus spoke to Nicodemus about salvation.  In Jhn 3:3, Jesus tells Nicodemus that we must be born again in order to enter the kingdom (the kingdom is the church – read “A Kingdom For All Nations” for further details on that).  Nicodemus asks how it is possible for someone to be born again (Jhn 3:4), and Jesus explains that we must be born of the Spirit and water (Jhn 3:5).  We are born of the Spirit when we listen and obey the words of the Holy Spirit found in the Bible (Jhn 6:63, 1 Cor 2:13), and we are born of water when we are baptized (1 Pet 3:21, Rom 6:4).  When we heed the Scriptures and are baptized, we are born again… and we become christians (Mk 16:16, Matt 28:19).
