A Voice For The Voiceless
Wednesday, November 30, 2016I am struggling with the issue of the church and abortion. I know the church is supposed to be unified, and we are supposed to love one another, but how is that possible when a number of pastors and congregations vote for candidates that support homosexual marriage, abortion, etc. I am particularly angry at black pastors who seem to sell their principles for the color of their skin. I can't sit in a black church or even pray with black christians because this rage over them supporting abortions consumes me. Am I wrong, or do they need to repent?Sincerely,
No Room In The Pew
Dear No Room In The Pew,
Abortion is a sin, and preachers that support abortion (regardless of skin color) are wrong. Children are already alive in the womb. John the Baptist leapt in his mother's womb (Lk 1:41). God specifically said that John was a child dedicated to Him from before birth (Lk. 1:15). Ps 139:13-16 makes a clear statement about life within the womb of a mother. Unborn children are credited as living, feeling humans, and therefore deserve just as much protection as any other human life. The abortion movement is a movement that seeks to deny rights to a silent and innocent segment of human society. Abortion is murder (1 Pet. 4:15). Any preacher or religious leader that promotes abortion is promoting murder. Don’t make this a race issue; make it an issue of morals without regard to race.
Reversed Roles
Friday, November 11, 2016My mom is going through depression; she was just in a breakup with her boyfriend. She wants a life, but she thinks by just praying, God will help her. I told her He can if He wants, but God wants to see her do it on her own, and He's not going to help her if she's not going to do the footwork to get her life back. Question is, was I wrong in telling her that? Because I need to get her back to being the mother and woman she was.Sincerely,
Worried Child
Dear Worried Child,
God will bless your mother when she chooses to search after righteousness. God says that He draws near to us when we draw near to Him (1 Jn 1:6-7). Christ said that all who seek God should “ask, seek, and knock” if they want to receive God’s help (Matt 7:7). God freely offers the gift of salvation to all mankind (Rom 6:23), but we have to want it and ask for it. Jesus told all His disciples to take up their crosses and follow after Him (Matt 16:24). We cannot live ungodly lives and expect God to bless us in those choices (Rom 6:1-2). You are absolutely correct in telling your mother that God has expectations.
Do, Re... Not Me!
Wednesday, November 09, 2016Is it a sin to not want to sing in church because I don’t sing very well; I sing to myself; is that the same?Sincerely,
Vocally Challenged
Dear Vocally Challenged,
There are many commands God gives that we don’t want to do, but we must do them all the same. Obeying God’s laws can seem a lot like drinking cough syrup – nobody wants to do it, but it is still good for you. We here at AYP, can sympathize with your lack of enthusiasm for singing; we once felt the exact same way. The Scriptures are clear though. We are told to sing and make melody in our hearts to God (Eph 5:19) and to use spiritual songs to admonish one another (Col 3:16). Your voice is a tool used by God to help edify, exhort, and strengthen your fellow brethren. So take your medicine and sing out loud.
Stage Fright
Thursday, November 03, 2016I have a question about Jesus and how I can be baptized in the Holy Spirit. It says in the Bible that the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples, and they talked in tongues, right? So I’m wondering why I can’t speak in tongues; I’ve gone up to the front at church a long time ago when I was young and was prayed over, but no tongues ever came out of me. Does this mean I’m not God’s child? Am I doomed? I know it sounds dumb, but I need help; I don’t know what to think. I don’t want to go up there again ever; I’m scared now.Sincerely,
Tongue-Tied
Dear Tongue-Tied,
You don’t need to speak in tongues to be saved… which is a good thing because nobody speaks in tongues anymore. Holy Spirit baptism was a miraculous event that happened to the apostles on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4). The only other time that Holy Spirit baptism occurred was at the first Gentile conversion (it was given as a sign to Peter that it was okay for non-Jews to become christians – Acts 10:45-48).
Holy Spirit baptism is not what saves you; water baptism is what saves you (Acts 8:36, Mk 16:16, 1 Pet 3:21). The Holy Spirit provided certain people with the ability to perform miracles. Other than the apostles, christians received these miraculous abilities by the laying on of the apostles’ hands (Acts 8:16-19). Doing the math, that means that the last person to have miraculous abilities (like speaking in tongues) had to have lived at the same time as the apostles. The last apostle died over 1,900 years ago! Any church that tells you that you have to speak in tongues, prophesy, perform miracles, etc. to be saved is lying to you and misapplying the Scriptures. We recommend you read “What Must I Do To Be Saved?”, so you can see what the Bible really says about salvation. Pastor-ette?
Tuesday, October 18, 2016Can a woman be a pastor? Please provide me with verses that back up your answer. Be blessed.Sincerely,
Lady In Waiting
Dear Lady In Waiting,
No. Pastors (Eph4:11) – also known as elders or bishops (Tit 1:5-7) – are always men. The qualifications for pastors are given in 1 Tim 3:1-7 and Tit 1:5-9. One of those qualifications is that he must be “a husband of one wife” (1 Tim 3:2, Tit 1:6) – that clearly rules out females from becoming pastors.
