Looking For Work
Tuesday, December 10, 2019I’m looking to become a pastor/minister/preacher, but how do I know for sure that this is what God is calling me to do? And how do I know where God is calling me to go?Sincerely,
Seeking Direction
Dear Seeking Direction,
A pastor is not the same thing as a minister/preacher. A pastor is an elder who shepherds a local congregation (1 Pet 5:1-2). You will know you are called to be a pastor when the congregation assesses you as a qualified man to serve in the eldership – after all, elders are always in groups. There is no example of a pastor leading a congregation by themselves. A congregation knows a man is qualified to serve as an elder when he meets the qualifications found in 1 Tim 3:1-7 and Tit 1:5-9. There is a lot of confusion in the religious world over this role, and the fact is that pastors aren’t the same thing as preachers!
If you want to know whether or not you are qualified to preach, read through 1st and 2nd Timothy which are letters Paul wrote to the young preacher, Timothy, and see if you are doing what a preacher should do. Preaching begins with studying to know what the Bible says and then actively doing it. If you are in a faithful congregation, you can ask them about how to get practice preaching and experience in the pulpit – that is what we do with our young men in our congregation. If you need a faithful congregation, (after all, lots of them aren’t following the Bible pattern) we would be happy to help you find one. Simply e-mail us at askyourpreacher@mvchurchofchrist.org.
Under-Gifted
Monday, December 09, 2019My girlfriend’s mother’s best friend claims she has a gift from God and can see the future. She does not like me and tells me and my girl’s family that I am going to hurt her and that I will lose her because of that... does this sound at all possible? And if so, where in the Bible does it say anything about when you are saved that God will grant you unnatural abilities? Because this is what she claims.Sincerely,
Not A Bad Boyfriend
Dear Not A Bad Boyfriend,
Eccl. 8:7-8 says that mankind doesn’t have the ability to tell the future – it is a mystery to us. There have been times that God gave prophets the ability to speak of the future, but the times of prophecies and visions are over.
Miraculous gifts were given to the first century church because they did not have the complete Bible as we do. Miracles were a confirmation that those preaching were sent by God (Mk 16:20); they were how God bore witness that these men were His servants (Heb 2:2-4). These miracles were necessary at that time, but now that the perfect Word of God has been completed, they are no longer needed (1 Cor 13:8-10). We have all the prophecies of God written down, all the divine knowledge is in God’s Word, and the Bible is translated into every major language on the planet.
Your girlfriend’s mother’s best friend is either consciously or subconsciously deceiving herself and others – she can’t see the future, and she has no supernatural gifts.
Black Market
Friday, December 06, 2019Is it a sin to purchase an item that has been stolen that I need to fix my truck? I’m a truck driver, and I need this item to continue working.Sincerely,
Savvy Shopper?
Dear Savvy Shopper,
It is illegal to purchase stolen goods, and God tells us to obey the laws of the land (Rom 12:1). If you knowingly purchase stolen goods, you are aiding and abetting a thief, and God tells us not to tie our lives together with the wicked (2 Cor 6:14). As much as you need this item, that isn’t the way to get it.
What About Them?
Thursday, December 05, 2019I am very confident in my faith in Jesus Christ as Lord, but I try to study other religions as well because I wonder how I am going to witness to them and tell them the truth if I know nothing about what they believe. My question is: is it wrong to study other religions? A few people have told me it is.Sincerely,
Ready To Research
Dear Ready To Research,
There isn’t anything wrong with studying other religions, but it would be a problem if you spent more time studying a false religion than you did studying the Bible. How we spend our time is indicative of our priorities. God tells us to study to show ourselves approved (2 Tim 2:15) and that we should grow in our knowledge, so we can teach others Jesus’ message (Heb 5:12). It is useful to know what false religions practice (even Paul had studied the pagan poets of his day – Acts 17:28), but it is not nearly as useful as knowing what the Bible says. The best way to prepare yourself to “give an answer for the hope that is within you” (1 Pet 3:15) is to make sure to study your Bible diligently. Once again, studying other religions isn’t wrong, but you need to make sure it is properly balanced with Bible study habits.
Ms. Teacher
Wednesday, December 04, 2019Was there a woman in the Bible that taught men the Word?Sincerely,
Teacher At Heart
Dear Teacher At Heart,
We have the example of Priscilla teaching and converting (Acts 18:24-26). There is nothing wrong with a woman trying to teach and convert a man to Christ… but we must also remember that she does not have the authority to teach or have authority over men in the public church setting (1 Cor 14:34-35). 1 Tim 2:12 specifically prohibits Christian women from teaching Christian men in a congregational forum. Women are not supposed to serve as public teachers in the worship service because men have the responsibility to lead the church in public teaching. Elders (Tit 1:5-6), deacons (1 Tim 3:12), and preachers (2 Tim 2:2) are all required to be men.
The world has been changed by godly women standing up for the truth and living godly lives. Paul mentions women ministering to others’ needs in Php 4:3, Rom 16:1, and Rom 16:3 – just to name a few. We have the example of Lydia being a servant to the church (Acts 16:14). We don’t know exactly what the women of Php. 4:2-3 were doing to help Paul, but we know they were working hard. The church is full of women that are faithful, zealous, and valued servants.
