Old Wives' Tales
Wednesday, September 04, 2013Should christians believe in old wives’ tales and superstitions? I was sitting outside on the front porch with friends, and a bird flew in the front door. Everyone started saying this was a sign of bad luck or death. What is your view?Sincerely,
One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest
Dear One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest,
Superstition is wrong. Christians know that all blessings flow from God (Jas 1:17) and that if things work out for us, it is because God took care of us (Rom 8:28). Luck has nothing to do with it. Superstitions try and bring control in our lives by predicting the future through random events (black cat crossing your path, carrying a lucky rabbit’s foot, etc.)… but that is nonsense and ignorance. The Bible declares that trusting in such things is foolishness and unfit for christians. We should all do exactly what Paul said to Timothy: refuse old wives’ tales (1 Tim. 4:7).
A Sign Of The Times
Sunday, September 01, 2013We are studying the book of Genesis in my small group Bible study. The teacher explained that before the prophecy in Isaiah and other passages in the Old Testament about the Virgin Mary giving birth to the Messiah, Jesus, that the Virgin and the Messiah were predicted by Zodiac signs, including the Virgo sign. My small group teacher said even though he did not believe in astrology, this was how the Messiah's birth was predicted in the early Bible times. But the Baal worshippers twisted the Zodiac concept around from what true followers of God had prophesied. As you can tell, it sounds very confusing, and he gave absolutely no Bible scriptures to back his theory. He is a very nice and sincere man, and I believe he loves God. But I read in numerous places in the Bible that anything to do with fortune telling (which Zodiac signs are) is strictly of Satan. The Bible says that Satan is the author of confusion, and this teacher was very confusing. I believe he thought he was being led by God's spirit. As you can tell, this is a difficult question, but prayerfully you can give me some Bible scriptures to back this teacher’s theory or disclaim this teacher’s theory.Sincerely,
Starry-Eyed Student
Dear Starry-Eyed Student,
Astrology is wrong, and so is this teacher. Astrology, mysticism, séances, horoscopes, palm reading, etc. are all sinful. God condemned that behavior in the Old Testament (Isa 47:13-14). King Saul was put to death by God for seeking a woman that practiced divining (1 Chr 10:13). Any Jew that was found visiting a ‘medium’ or ‘spiritist’ would be cut off from His people (Lev 20:6). In the New Testament, astrology is just as roundly condemned. Paul cast out an evil spirit that was fortune-telling (Acts 16:16-18). When someone became a christian, they confessed sorcery as evil, and many of them burned their books of the magical arts (Acts 19:18-20). If we want wisdom, we should seek it from God (Jas 1:5). All astrology, horoscopes, and the like are wrong.
Since God clearly condemns astrology, it wouldn’t make any sense that He would use astrology to predict the coming of Jesus. As you said, there aren’t any verses to back up what this teacher was saying… there is a reason for that. Regardless of what this man’s general character is, he has made a mistake. The Bible simply doesn’t back up his theory.
What's In The Blood
Friday, August 30, 2013Leviticus 3:17, along with other similar passages, forbids believers to eat any blood. The Jehovah's Witnesses don't accept blood transfusions and won't eat meat with blood in it for this reason. My question is: how can you eat blood if blood is liquid… isn't it? And also, someone said in order to eat something, you have to digest it. You don't digest blood transfusions, right? So what exactly does Leviticus 3:17 mean?Sincerely,
Blood Donor
Dear Blood Donor,
It is possible to eat blood if it is prepared as a dish (i.e. blood sausage, blood pie, etc.); however, it would be wrong to do so (see "Blood In The Pudding" for New Testament teachings on that subject). This verse, however, doesn't address why Jehovah's Witnesses don't accept blood transfusions. The reason JW's don't get blood transfusions is because "the life is in the blood" (Deu 12:23). They improperly apply an Old Testament teaching that dealt with eating to a medical treatment in the world of the New Testament. Christians are not under the Old Testament law (Gal 3:23-25). The Old Testament still provides many faithful examples and principles, but its specific laws have been nailed to the cross (Col 2:14). The Old Testament law has faded away and been replaced by the perfect law of liberty in Christ (Jas 1:25). Read "Out With The Old?" for further details on the place of the Old Testament in the life of a christian.
Tired Of Trusting
Wednesday, August 28, 2013I feel I have lost faith in humanity. Now, at the age of twenty-three, after going through some extremely challenging times and feeling deeply wounded, I find myself not developing relationships with others. However, I have a strong relationship with God and have strong spiritual conviction. In my past, I have never been able to trust men, and I fear returning to church because I know it’s set up in a patriarchal structure. I feel like if I go back to the church, then I will have to be inferior to men and God, and I cannot accept that fate as I am a strong, loving woman and feel that gender should have no role in my relationship with God. How can I restore my faith in humanity when I have suffered and endured so much and am continuously disappointed by the acts of others?
Sincerely,
Jaded
Dear Jaded,
Before you give up on mankind, remember something – God hasn’t given up on us. Until God destroys this world with fiery judgment at the Second Coming, there is hope for people (2 Pet 3:7-9). Even though many people are ungodly and uncaring (after all, the gate to destruction is wide – Matt 7:13), not everyone is that way.
Any religious groups that treat women as inferior aren’t reading their Bibles. The Bible clearly states that women are equal heirs of life with men (1 Pet 3:7). Men and women are different, but different doesn’t mean one is better than the other. The Bible is the only great religious document to treat women with such esteem. Two books of the Bible are named after women (Ruth and Esther). An entire chapter of Proverbs is dedicated to the worth and wonder of godly women (Proverbs 31). While the Koran, Dharma, and Veda all treat women as inferior… the Bible protects your rights and esteems your value.
It is impossible to serve God and not interact with people. People are what Christ came to this earth for (Matt 28:18-20). Christians are warned against forsaking the church and failing to gain and offer the encouragement that can be found in church services (Heb 10:24-25). Christianity isn’t meant to be pursued alone… God put us on this earth together. We can help you find a faithful church in your area. We admit that many churches aren’t faithful and aren’t trustworthy, but just because false teachers have let you down, that doesn’t mean you stop looking. Searching for a Bible-fearing congregation is part of what hungering and thirsting for righteousness is all about (Matt 5:6). Maybe, just maybe, all your struggles have been leading up to this moment when you could find us, and we could help you find people who love the Lord as much as you do. You never know until you try. Our e-mail is askyourpreacher@mvchurchofchrist.org, and we are happy to help.
Help Is This Way!
Monday, August 19, 2013I’ve been Googling different religions ranging from Catholic to Egyptian and Mason to Branhamism. Combined with how I was raised, I’m getting worried. I definitely believe in Jesus Christ. There’s just so much information on the history and origins, and everyone is right. I need to be saved, and I just need your help.Sincerely,
Ready To Obey
Dear Ready To Obey,
The Bible outlines five things you must do to become a christian. The question, “What must I do to be saved?” is the most important question any human can ever ask. Plenty of groups will pick and choose what they want to focus on. Many groups say that all you must do is “believe in your heart” and you will be saved – unfortunately, this is cherry-picking out one requirement and leaving the rest behind. We must always remember that the sum of God’s Word provides the truth (Ps 119:160). Belief is obviously an important element to salvation, but it is not the only condition. The Bible outlines five separate requirements for salvation, and all of them are necessary.
- Hear the Word. Faith comes through hearing, and hearing comes through the Word of God (Rom 10:17). Until someone hears God’s Word, they are incapable of obeying it.
- Believe the Word. It is impossible for someone to become a christian unless they believe that Jesus is the Savior and Son of God (Jhn 20:31, Acts 16:31, Jhn 3:16).
- Repent of your sins. ‘Repent’ means to ‘change your mind’. That change of mind always involves a change of action as well. Repentance is when we change our mind about what is important and submit ourselves to Jesus and His Word. Repentance is a necessity of salvation (Mk 6:12, Lk 13:5, Lk 15:7).
- Confess Jesus to others. If we have sworn our allegiance to Jesus, we must be prepared to publicly confess Him as our Lord. If we won’t confess Jesus before men, He won’t confess us before God (Matt 10:32-33, Lk 12:8-9).
- Be baptized in the name of Jesus for salvation. Many groups baptize people, but very few baptize people for the right reasons. Baptism isn’t merely an “outward showing of an inward faith” or “for membership”. Baptism is what saves us (1 Pet 3:21). Baptism is the point where someone goes from being lost to saved because they are buried and resurrected with Christ (Rom 6:4-5). Baptism is the final requirement to become a christian (Acts 2:37-38, Mk 16:16, Acts 2:41). There is not a single example of someone becoming a christian without baptism. Baptism is just as necessary as the other four requirements.
After that, there remains nothing else but to find a faithful congregation to assemble with (Heb 10:24) that teaches God’s Word and God’s Word only (see “Finding a Church” for more details) and to continue to grow in knowledge and practice of God’s Word (1 Pet 2:2). If you would like help finding a congregation in your area, please e-mail us at askyourpreacher@mvchurchofchrist.org, and we will happily put you in contact with a faithful church.
