The Restoration Movements
Tuesday, May 14, 2013According to the history of the "Church of Christ," God used certain men to "restore" the New Testament church in the early 1800's. Where was the true New Testament church before then? Jesus said that the gates of hell would not prevail against His church (Matthew 16:18). What happened to the church, and where was the truth it was responsible for preaching before God restored it?
Sincerely,
History Buff
Dear History Buff,
Your question brings up a common misconception. Most churches of Christ in America can trace their roots back to a movement in early American history commonly known as ‘the Restoration Movement’. It is called the Restoration Movement because those spearheading the movement wanted to restore worship back to the ways of the New Testament. They wanted to go back to the Bible for all of their answers and practices. This is exactly what the Lord calls us to do (1 Cor 4:6, Josh 1:7, Jhn 14:6, Rev 22:18-19).
The misconception is that these were the first men to do this. That is a myth. America is not the first country to contain people who wanted to go back to God’s Word for all that they said and did. Even within the Bible, we see people seeking to restore Bible-based worship. King Josiah found a copy of the Law and told the people to return to God (2 Kgs 22:10-13). Jesus told the Jews to go back to the Scriptures and understand what God was telling them (Mk 12:24). Jesus warned against making traditions that usurped the authority of the Scriptures (Mk 7:10-13).
The church has never been destroyed, and throughout many, many ages (including the darkest ages of Catholicism), there have been people who have sought to honestly and humbly serve God. The Restoration Movement in America is merely one story of people that have sought to put God’s Word back into its rightful place. The Bible is the seed of the church (Lk 8:11). When a group of people commits itself to do what the Bible says – no more and no less – a church is formed. Many of these congregations in America use the name ‘church of Christ’ because it is a Biblical name (Rom 16:16), and it is a recognizable name to other christians who are looking for faithful churches… but make no mistake, the Restoration Movement in America wasn’t the first (and it won’t be the last) group of people that wanted simple Christianity.
Sin Or Synagogue?
Sunday, April 14, 2013I have a question about Jewish people. I have heard of people saying that they are Jewish, but what is the difference between them and other churches? I know this is a big question, but it has been on my mind for a few days, and I know that your answers are from the Bible, and I can trust you. Thanks and keep up the good work.Oh, I forgot to add one last thing, I have heard somewhere before (I think) that maybe Jesus was Jewish; is this true? Thanks for the help, guys!
Sincerely,
Who’s A Jew?
Dear Who’s A Jew,
Jesus was a Jew because He lived under the Old Testament Law. The Old Testament Law was given by Moses (Jhn 1:17). The Old Testament was God’s contract with the nation of Israel (also known as the Jewish nation). Jesus was born an Israelite. Jesus came and fulfilled the Old Testament law by living a perfect and sinless life (Matt 5:17). Through Christ, we have a new law… the New Testament (Rom 7:4). Modern Jews follow parts of the Old Testament (the Jewish religion of today has veered away quite a bit from the law given by Moses), but they never follow the New Testament because they don’t believe Jesus was the Savior. Today’s Jews are still waiting for the Messiah to come and bring them peace and prosperity. Jesus was rejected by the Jewish leadership (Lk 9:22). If you look at a Jew’s Bible, it will only contain the Old Testament because they are still waiting for a Savior that has already come.
... I Just Don't See It
Thursday, April 11, 2013Is seeing a person's aura of the devil? The reason I am asking is because there was a young boy at our church who told us in his testimony that God had given him the gift of seeing a person's aura. Thank you.Sincerely,
Wigged Out
Dear Wigged Out,
That young boy has either been coerced into delusion, or he was purposefully lying. The Lord teaches that the devil uses lying wonders and false signs (2 Thess 2:9). For centuries, false teachers have professed that they could perform miracles… and they have always been wrong. The miracles that were performed by the apostles in the first century were verifiable, visible, and obvious. The ability to see someone’s “aura” is invisible, unverifiable, and mysterious. This young man isn’t telling the truth.
Stage Fright
Saturday, April 06, 2013I have a question about Jesus and how I can be baptized in the Holy Spirit. It says in the Bible that the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples, and they talked in tongues, right? So I’m wondering why I can’t speak in tongues; I’ve gone up to the front at church a long time ago when I was young and was prayed over, but no tongues ever came out of me. Does this mean I’m not God’s child? Am I doomed? I know it sounds dumb, but I need help; I don’t know what to think. I don’t want to go up there again ever; I’m scared now.Sincerely,
Tongue-Tied
Dear Tongue-Tied,
You don’t need to speak in tongues to be saved… which is a good thing because nobody speaks in tongues anymore. Holy Spirit baptism was a miraculous event that happened to the apostles on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4). The only other time that Holy Spirit baptism occurred was at the first Gentile conversion (it was given as a sign to Peter that it was okay for non-Jews to become christians – Acts 10:45-48).
Holy Spirit baptism is not what saves you; water baptism is what saves you (Acts 8:36, Mk 16:16, 1 Pet 3:21). The Holy Spirit provided certain people with the ability to perform miracles. Other than the apostles, christians received these miraculous abilities by the laying on of the apostles’ hands (Acts 8:16-19). Doing the math, that means that the last person to have miraculous abilities (like speaking in tongues) had to have lived at the same time as the apostles. The last apostle died over 1,900 years ago! Any church that tells you that you have to speak in tongues, prophesy, perform miracles, etc. to be saved is lying to you and misapplying the Scriptures. We recommend you read “What Must I Do To Be Saved?”, so you can see what the Bible really says about salvation. Need More Data
Sunday, March 31, 2013Hi. While my faith has recently been shaky, I'm happy to say that I am a whole-hearted believer in God. My closest friend, however, is far from that which is something I've started to question God about. She is very intelligent, especially in the sciences. Actually, to be honest, we both are rather gifted in that area which is probably what brought us together. But the most important thing that separates us is that she doesn't believe in God, and she has a lot of scientific evidence to back up her opinion. I have my evidence too, but whenever the subject comes up, she refuses to talk about it, saying she's concerned she'll ruin my faith. How do I reach out to a person like this? It hurts me so much to see her live out her life with obvious gaps that only God can fill.
Any suggestions on how to direct my friend to the Lord without ruining our friendship? She has developed something against religion recently, saying that it's just a tool used through history to give people power and reason to kill. This really bothers me, but again, the friendship is so important to me, and I don't want to lose it. At the same time, her salvation is also at least that important to me. Thanks, and God bless.
Sincerely,
A Proven Friend
Dear A Proven Friend,
You are obviously dealing with a very intelligent person who has formed her own opinions… but without all the data. What we normally do when studying with someone like this is to hand them a couple of books and tell them we would like to hear their thoughts after they are finished reading. That has a two-fold effect:
- It takes all wrangling over words out of the picture because it isn't an argument anymore... they are simply reading.
- It shows you how serious they are about pursuing the subject. If it is important, they will read and get back to you, but if it isn't important, the subject will just get dropped. Either way, you can have a clear conscience that you tried to help.
In this circumstance, we recommend "Evidence That Demands A Verdict" by Josh McDowell (this book should address much of the argument of the Bible being used as a tool to hurt others). We also recommend “Case For A Creator” by Lee Strobel to deal with the scientific arguments and “Has God Spoken?” by A.O. Schnabel (which addresses the internal evidence of the Bible’s supernatural origins). That is our recommendation on the topic… less confrontation and more information.
